The Ettamongah

Rock climbing via Ettamongah Hotel website

The iconic Ettamongah Pub is instantly to one and all recognisable due to its kooky slanted timber facade. Contained within its expansive compound is a rock climbing wall, arcade games, and children’s playground amongst more adult-focused entertainment. Grab a seat in the courtyard so you can watch your children at play. As expected, The Ettamongah Bistro serves up quintessential Aussie pub grub and has a menu just for kids. However, a fair warning, try to plan a trip there during the week instead of the weekend as there can be an extended wait for service during the busy weekend shifts.

North Ryde RSL
Tribal Zone - KKDay Top 10- Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Sydney
Tribal Zone via Ryde District Mums page

RSLs or Returned and Services League of Australia is a charitable organisation which seeks to aid returned military personnel in their well-being. They created clubs in various communities across Australia, initially for these soldiers to relax and enjoy fellowship with their families and friends. Since then, RSLs have become a meeting hub in the community, a place where family and friends come together to each, catch up and play.

North Ryde has taken the idea of play and ran with it. Their Tribal Zone is a supervised area of childhood excitement. Your monkey can go wild in the jungle gym with giant ball pit, and the older ones will go nuts over the arcade games and air hokey tables. The children are free to play with everything in two-hour sessions at AUD $6 each.

The great news about Tribal Zone is that it is right next to Riverview Bar and Dining, making them a definite kid-friendly restaurant in Sydney. The menu changes each season and is simple and comforting. You can enjoy a goat’s cheese tart, followed by beef cheek in polenta mash while the little ones dine on penne bolognese paired with a drink and ice cream. A family lunch at the North Ryde RSL is a fun lunch.

The Henson
Ice cream sundae from The Henson - KKDay Top 10 Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Sydney
Fudged Sundae via The Henson page

The Henson is a nondescript local hotel in Marrickville. There is nothing pretentious about this venue and their children’s play area is equally unremarkable if you are comparing it to bowling and air hockey tables. Equipped with a small rock climb and foam pit, mega blocks strewn on the floor in front of a colourful Mr Men murals and a wall chalkboard, the playroom looks thrown together.

However, just like the dining area, the simplicity is just a facade. There isn’t a need for fancy digs when the food speaks for itself. The playroom, while simple, is sufficient to entertain the younger ones while the older ones battle high scores on arcade machines. When its time to order, the kid’s menu is one of the more extensive ones around. Additionally, the consideration put into both that and the main menu is apparent.

If good, fresh, humble Australian tucker is priority then take the kids to The Henson where you won’t be disappointed.
