Pulau Langkawi Transportation Tips – Plane, Ferry and Train

Langkawi is a well-known tourist attraction, and its transportation is relatively complete compared to other cities in Northern Malaysia. If you happen to be planning to visit Langkawi, here are a few ways to get to Langkawi below.

By Air

Langkawi has an airport which is closer to the city! There are many domestic airlines that provide services to Langkawi, such as Air Asia, Malindo Air and Firefly. It only takes an hour to get there from Kuala Lumpur, 30 minutes from Penang. A round-trip air ticket is about RM100~RM250, which is the most convenient and fastest way to Langkawi.

By Ferry

If you want to try something different, it is recommended that you take a ferry from Penang to Langkawi, you could enjoy the magnificent view of the sea during the 3-hour journey. There are two trips daily from Penang to Langkawi, 8:30am or 2:00 pm, and return trip is 10:30am or 3:00pm. You can now easily buy your tickets online.

By Train

If you prefer land transportation instead of air or sea, you should probably take the train. KTM ETS (Electric Train Services) provide train service from Kuala Lumpur or Penang to Alor Setar. From here you can take a taxi or local bus to the ferry terminal at Kuala Kedah for 20 minutes, and take a ferry from the port to Langkawi for 90 minutes. If you wish to travel by ETS, it is recommended that you purchase tickets online in advance.

By Car

If you are a person who loves to drive, it takes only one and a half hours to drive from Penang to Kuala Kedah. After passing the Penang Bridge, go from the highway to Alor Setar. There is an exit to Alor Selatan for about 50 kilometres. Continue along the road to Langkawi and you will arrive at Kuala Kedah. There are many covered parking lots nearby for your parking. From here you can take a ferry to Langkawi, the journey takes one and a half hours.

Getting Around Langkawi

Basically the way to get to Langkawi is to take a plane or take a ferry from Kuala Kedah. The airport is quite close to the city, taxis are available in abundance and they are the most popular transport in the island. There are also many car rental services over there, it is generally more convenient and economical for tourists to rent a car or a motorbike. You can arrange your own itinerary, travel around the island, and visit major famous attractions.
