Low-Maintenance Plants for New Plant Parents

Plant parenting has become a massive trend in recent years. And for a good reason. Growing houseplants takes a lot of work. But that is why we love them. Taking care of indoor plants is an excellent way to bring nature to our lives. It is also good for our mental health. The best part about being a plantita is admiring your efforts and feeling good, knowing that you’ve taken care of them yourself.

But the thought of having to care for plants can be overwhelming. What if you keep low-maintenance plants that require little upkeep? Here are some examples that are easy to grow even if you don’t have a green thumb.

Aloe Vera

The aloe vera plant makes for a great green companion. The plant does not appreciate direct, sustained sunlight, as this tends to dry it too much and make its leaves yellow. If you tend to get scratches and burns, why not try the natural healing properties of aloe vera?

Peace Lily

Peace lilies are also a great choice. Peace lilies are beautiful plants that not only brighten a room but also clean the air. These beautiful plants are easy to care for and provide more than just beauty—they help purify the air as well. Using balanced fertilizer once or twice a year is enough to keep the plant happy. Wash or wipe the leaves at least once a year as well.

Pothos plants don’t need to be watered as often, so you can set them in less-than-ideal conditions and still see them thrive. However, these can sometimes be infested with pests. To get rid of them, simply dab them with a cotton bud soaked in alcohol to kill the insects.

The rubber tree plant has waxy leaves and an impressive appearance. It requires deep soil and regular watering but will grow up to 30 meters in height. The key to maintaining these plants is the right amount of sun, water, and temperature.

The snake plant really ups the ante on versatility. This plant is an excellent choice for compact spaces with a slender, upright shape and its variegated grey-green leaves. The snake plant is also highly tolerant of drought.

A distant cousin of the lily, the spider plant is one of the easiest to grow. It has long, narrow, and draping leaves. Spider plants like high humidity and are best placed in a room with extra moisture, such as a kitchen or a bathroom.

The ZZ plant is one of the most popular indoor plants around. Dutch nurseries have been propagating it in South Africa since 1996, and now it’s all over the world.
