Singapore and Hong Kong are set to make history as they launch the world’s first two-way air travel bubble beginning this Sunday, 22 November 2020. This will allow air travel between both cities without quarantine upon arrival, but with certain conditions. Travelers from both cities are elated, as finally they will be able to go on an overseas trip after months of quarantine.
But before you book your tickets, KKDay prepared a cheat sheet with EVERYTHING you need to know about the much-awaited travel bubble. So, take screenshots, bookmark this page, and read on.
WHY SINGAPORE AND HONG KONG?
According to the Hong Kong government, both cities achieved similar successes in containing the COVID-19 pandemic and have relatively low case numbers. However, if the daily average number of untraceable cases in one week reaches more than five in either city, the travel bubble will be suspended for two weeks. The bubble can only then resume if the figure drops on the last day of the suspension period.
AM I ELIGIBLE TO TRAVEL?
Anyone who stayed in Singapore or Hong Kong in the last 14 days is eligible to travel.
WHAT DO I NEED?
- A negative PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test from a recognized clinic or testing center 72 hours prior to departure
- All travelers who are not Singapore residents or long term pass holders must apply for an Air Travel Pass and book a designated bubble flight (marked with a travel bubble label)
- Necessary visas or permits to enter both Hong Kong or Singapore
- Hong Kong travelers need to download the Singaporean TraceTogether App (you must register before landing. Keep it activated during your stay and 14 days after leaving Singapore.)
- Electronic health declaration to be submitted to the SG Arrival Card Service
WHICH AIRLINES WILL BE FLYING?
Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines will operate alternating flights between the two cities.
HOW MANY FLIGHTS TO SINGAPORE?
According to the Hong Kong government, there will be one flight a day limited to 200 passengers. This will increase to two flights a day from 07 December 2020 onwards.
HOW WILL COVID-19 TESTS BE CARRIED OUT?
When you’re flying from Hong Kong to Singapore, you must take a test 72 hours before departure at a recognized clinic or testing center. There is no additional test required upon arrival in Singapore.
When you’re flying from Singapore to Hong Kong, you must take another pre-departure test within 72 hours. An extra test is also required upon arrival at Hong Kong International Airport, which can take at least four hours. Tests upon arrival at Hong Kong International Airport need to be booked and paid for ahead of time.
HOW MUCH ARE THE COVID-19 TESTS?
A test from Hong Kong’s testing centers will cost about $240, while tests in Singapore cost approximately $500.
WHAT IF I TEST POSITIVE FOR COVID-19?
Travelers who test positive while in Hong Kong or Singapore will bear the full cost of any medical treatment, subject to medical and healthcare policies.
CAN I USE THE TRAVEL BUBBLE TO FLY TO ANOTHER COUNTRY?
No. This travel bubble is only applicable to flights between Hong Kong and Singapore.
But if you’re traveling from another country and have stayed in either Singapore or Hong Kong for at least 14 days, then you are free to travel within the bubble, as long as you fulfill every element of the requirements.
WHAT MEASURES DO I HAVE TO OBSERVE DURING MY TRIP?
Comply with prevailing public health and safety distancing measures in both Singapore and Hong Kong. Wear masks, and observe limits on group gatherings.
WHERE CAN I STAY IN HONG KONG?
