SG Ministry Of Foreign Affairs and Other Countries Issue Travel Advisory For Hong Kong

The ministry is urging Singaporeans to avoid affected areas, specifically the Hong Kong International Airport and Yuen Long in the New Territories, as more protests are expected to take place.

Over the past few weeks, the island has seen several large-scale pro-democracy protests that have since turned into a violent stand-off between activists and the police. Reports also stated that gangsters have attacked demonstrators as well as journalists and passersby at a public transport station.

Meanwhile, other countries have also stressed the risk of traveling to Hong Kong during this time of distress.

Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade was the first to issue a travel warning, advising citizens to be vigilant following the violent stand-offs in the city.

Canada has urged travelers to stay updated by monitoring the local media for news and information on upcoming demonstrations.

South Korea also warned against filming the demonstrations and wearing black shirts and face masks, as they may easily be mistaken as protesters.

On its consulate’s Facebook page, Australia alerted citizens about confrontations and attacks aimed towards commuters in the New Territories.

The British government has also advised travelers and those working in Hong Kong to stay vigilant and immediately leave the city if they notice any signs of disorder.

At present, it seems like Hong Kong won’t be seeing a rest in demonstrations soon, as more protests are being planned on Hong Kong Island and in Tseung Kwan O, Wong Tai Sin, Tai Po, Sham Shui Po, Hung Hom, To Kwa Wan, Tsuen Wan, Kwai Tsing and Tsing Yi in the coming days and weeks.
