Relax and Unwind: Taichung’s Most Beautiful Nature Spots

Taichung emerged as the “most liveable city” in a survey among Taiwanese locals in 2013. True enough, this city in Central Taiwan is just the ideal place to live, thanks to its easy access to nature, arts and culture spots, and commercial hubs. It has Taipei’s urban charm, but Taichung flaunts more beautiful mountains and historic temples. And if you plan to see what Taichung has to offer, here are just some of its scenic nature spots you’ll enjoy:

 

Gaomei Wetlands

Head to Gaomei Wetlands during sunset– you won’t regret it. This protected reserve is a vast tidal flat found in Qingshui District of Taichung. It’s a famous sightseeing spot to see breathtaking views of the sunset. The wetlands are a mix of mud and sand, where you can also soak your feet to relax. You can stroll or bike along Gaomei, take photos, and spot migratory birds, fishes, and crabs as you visit this beautiful piece of nature in Taichung! 

Location: Qingshui District, Taichung, Taiwan
How to get here: Renting a car or a taxi is the most convenient way to get to Gaomei Wetlands. But if you prefer to commute, take bus no. 309 and get off at Windmill #18. Walk across the pedestrian lane going to the Visitor Center.

 


Wuling Farm

One of the best all-year-round destinations in Taichung is Wuling Farm. During summer and autumn, be delighted by the abundant harvest season while in spring and summer, you get blossoming fruit orchard views. It’s most loved during its cherry blossom season when pink trees dominate the whole farm. It’s a lovely space to hike and appreciate outdoor scenery.

How to get here: Take the TRA and get off at Yilan Station. Transfer to Kuo-Kuang Bis 1751, then get off at Wuling Farm stop.

 

 

Dongshih Forest Garden

Dongshi Forest Garden is a favorite summer destination in Taichung. This 200-hectare forest resort is characterized by lush greeneries and stunning scenery. It’s a recreational area where tourists can enjoy plenty of activities like barbecue grilling, camping, hiking, horse riding, and skiing. Come here in March or April to experience firefly-watching, that’s even more magical at nighttime.

How to get here: Take the TRA and get off at Fengyuan Station. Transfer to Fengyuan Bus 209 and get off at Dongshih Forest Garden stop.

 

 

Fushoushan Farm

A visit to Fushoushan Farm will make you love farm life. Situated near the mountains, you get not only breathtaking views but a lovely farm experience. Roam around the tree plantations and try fruit picking in October or November which is one of the most popular things to do on the farm. You could even book a stay at the guesthouses if you want to stay longer. Fall is the best time to visit to witness the autumn foliage.

How to get here: Take the TRA to Fengyuan Station. Transfer to Fengyuan Bus 865 to Lishan Stop. Transfer again to Fengyuan Bus 866 Shuttle 1, then get off at Fushoushan Farm stop. 

 

 

Guguan Hot Springs

Surrounded by a lovely expanse of forest and crystal blue creeks, Guguan Hot Springs is a destination to relax after a tiring day of Taichung exploration. This hot spring was discovered in 1907 way back in the Japanese colonial era. The hot spring water is carbonic acid that’s good for the heart. Aside from having a relaxing hot spring session, many people go here for camping and fishing. The best part would be the glorious spring and autumn backdrop that feels like you’re in paradise!

Location: Bo’ai Village, Heping District, Taichung City, Taiwan
How to get here: Take the THSR to Taichung Station and transfer to Fengyuan Bus 153. Get off at Guguan stop. 

 

 

Great Snow Mountain National Forest Recreation Area (Daxueshan National Forest)

Is hiking your thing? Don’t miss an experience at the Great Snow Mountain National Forest Recreation Area where you can view a natural landscape via the Yakou Observatory. It’s located at the end of the Snow Mountain range, composed of Shiaoshui, Anma, Boat-shaped, and Shaolai mountains. Budding mountaineers come here for an adventure hike as there are trails made for explorations.

How to get here: Take TRA to Fengyuan Station. Then, transfer to Taichung City Bus 90, 206, 207 and get off at Dongshi stop. Transfer to Taichung City Bus 252 (note that this is only available during weekends!)

 


Dakeng Scenic Area

Another must-visit hiking spot you should definitely include in your itinerary is the Dakeng Scenic Area. It’s characterized by the famous logged path, where 10 challenging trails are found–perfect for pro hikers. Along the hike, you’ll see dense forests and even wild monkeys who live in the area. Wooden shelters are available at some stops on the trail, but others find it ideal to camp out to savor the fresh air and beautiful views at sunrise.

How to get here: To get to the trails, you can take bus numbers#1, 15, 16, 20, 21, 31, 51, 66, 68, 85 or THSR numbers 270, 271, 276 and get off at Taipower Dongshan Service.
