Don’t Let the Cold Stop You: 8 Winter Things to Do in Tokyo

Heavily coated snow, chilly air, and misty blue skies… winter in Tokyo is truly magical. Sure, you’d want to experience the famous Shibuya Crossing or the Tokyo Skytree, but from mid-December to late-March, you might want to try more seasonal activities. Here’s our list of local winter activities in Tokyo to make your Japan trip extra ‘cool’.

Mt. Fuji is definitely one of Japan’s most famous attractions, but it also likes to hide within the fog from time to time. While it’s also iconic during spring and autumn seasons, the snow-covered volcano becomes perfectly postcard-worthy this time of year.

If you’re staying in Japan for two days, don’t miss out on the opportunity to get high-quality snow, beautiful sceneries, and relaxing hot springs. Gear up and take a 75-minute bullet train in Shinkansen where you can get dropped off directly to the skiing resort.

3. Tumble down to Tokyo’s ice skating rinks

No time to go skiing? Whether you’re a professional skater or a beginner; traveling with friends, family, or with that special someone, you’re bound to have a good time sliding the ice rink (or falling down).

For the nearest ice rink in Tokyo, hit up Meiji Jingu Gaien, Citizen Plaza, and DyDo Drinco.

4. De-stress in top-notch hot springs

Nothing is more rewarding than feeling the hot groundwater warm up your muscles during the chilliest time of the year. Make your way to Oedo Onsen Monogatari which names itself as a hot spring amusement park. Or try Spa LaQua, which has dozens of baths and saunas for you to relax in.

5. Catch the big boys in action

I mean, who doesn’t love seeing two boys fight in their diapers? If you’re looking for more Japanesque things to do, we highly recommend booking a ticket to the grand sumo tournament. Watch two heavyweight men force each other off the ring to see who has got what it takes to win the championship while as snacking on dishes from the nearest restaurants.

The tournament runs from January 14 to 28, 2019 and tickets go on sale starting from December 28, 2018!

6. Revel under the magical illuminations

Wintertime might mean shorter, colder, and gloomier days for you, but for Tokyo, it just means more sparkling winter wonderland illuminations as millions of colorful lights are display around trees, buildings, and even landmarks such as the Tokyo Tower.

Journey to Yebisu Garden Place at Ebisu or Yomiuri Land at Tama area, or even at Shinjuku Southern Terrace at Shinjuk for Tokyo’s best and the flashiest light decorations.

7. Get an extra shot of holiday spirit
